FS Toastmasters

In a table topic, Molly Garnett said she found happiness with parasailing. Toastmaster Jeanne Resen sailed through her happiness theme. She spoke about how happiness is measured.  She talked about how Eastern religions achieve happiness.  Jeanne also summarized what Judaism and Catholicism speak about happiness.  She included Abraham Maslow’s theory of peak experiences. Wordmaster Caitlin Owens used Precipice as the w ord of the day. The G rammarian was Melinda Lowrance, the Ah Counter was Don Groff, and the Timer was Hoyt Griffith. Joseph Girmann told a joke about Sherlock Holmes and Watson going camping. Guest speaker Rei Fuller spoke about the benefits about joining and advanced club.  She is a member of the Advanced speakers of Asheville. She spoke of the benefits of the level of feedback that members receive and he experience of delivering longer speeches.  Members need to have achieved at least level 2 in Pathways or have given...

Evaluator Melinda wore sunshine colors, noted Toastmaster Karla, in her SALUTATION to the summer theme. Word master Don Groff defined and sampled that word so well that members picked up using it from the start.  As there was a last-minute cancellation of the joke master, Joseph filled in with a great three-part twist.  We were led down one path and then redirected down another.  In summary, St. Patrick, by touch, healed the first man of arthritis, the second man of migraines, and the third man insisted he was not to be touched because he wanted his disability checks. Jeanne spoke on "Do You Know How to Speak?"  This was the first speech on the Level Two of Pathways, on knowing which one of the four communication styles you tend to using: initiating, analytical, direct, and supportive.  Jeanne said if you identified your own style, then you could tailor it to fit the needs of the listener.  She was evaluated by Melinda. Much of this Memorial Day Weekend meeting was thematic.  Toastmaster Susann Swan led the meeting on the theme of "in memoriam".  Word master Don Groff selected "legacy," and Judy gave her speech on memoirs. The remainder of the eyes and ears team included Melinda as grammarian, Randy as ah counter, and Karla as timer.  Sally Jones was joke master dealing with a chicken coop.  Judy's speech title was "Help Them Remember You."  She said her sister and mother had collaborated on a book of memoirs; Judy's mother passed away at the age of 95 two weeks ago.  Judy went on to contrast a blog with a memoir.  She said most memoirs in the library are in the biography section.  She opened and closed with the idea that we all have a story to tell.  She was evaluated by Don Emon. Judy opened the meeting with the installation of the officers for the 2019-2020 program year who were in attendance.   She presented tools to them to symbolize the roles they will play in the club.   The officers installed were Melinda Lowrance—Sergeant at Arms; Don Groff—Treasurer; Stan Coss – Secretary; Karen Alexander—VP of Education; and Susann Swan—President. Toastmaster Karen Alexander gave joyful as the theme.  The role of word master was vacant but presented no problem, as the word master, Sally Jones, posted a print out of Conundrum.  Susann gave the joke of the day about some special parrots. Sally gave an 8 to 10 minute speech about “Conquering the Cold Call.”   She enlisted Betty to be her cold call as they discussed homes with problems with odors, and Sally tried to sell an air purification system to Betty. Judy invited Jeanne to induct Susann Swan as a member of FSTM, after the membership had voted to admit her formally as a member of the organization. This was followed by the election of officers for the new program year beginning July 1. Jeanne Resen, VP Membership, conducted the induction ceremony.  Jeanne was in the light; those not "in the light" in this and other pictures may seem a bit fuzzy.  But we can be flexible until the light bulbs are replaced (flex or flexible was the word of the day).  Michael Thompson, too, can be flexible, as he is a veteran member but was only now officially inducted.  Toastmaster Don #1 presided over the meeting with the theme of changes.  The Grammarian was Amy, Ah-Counter was Hoyt, and Timer was Karen. Don Emon presented a joke of changes, from one for the money to two for the show to three to get ready and for to go. Karla was the get ready part as table topics evaluator and GE.   But let's not get ahead of ourselves.  Table topics featured seven members as there was just one prepared speaker, Stan Coss, with his "Love Potion" from the first project of the Humorously Speaking Manual.
