In Memoriam

Much of this Memorial Day Weekend meeting was thematic.  Toastmaster Susann Swan led the meeting on the theme of "in memoriam".  Word master Don Groff selected "legacy," and Judy gave her speech on memoirs.

The remainder of the eyes and ears team included Melinda as grammarian, Randy as ah counter, and Karla as timer.  Sally Jones was joke master dealing with a chicken coop.

Judy's speech title was "Help Them Remember You."  She said her sister and mother had collaborated on a book of memoirs; Judy's mother passed away at the age of 95 two weeks ago.  Judy went on to contrast a blog with a memoir.  She said most memoirs in the library are in the biography section.  She opened and closed with the idea that we all have a story to tell.  She was evaluated by Don Emon.

Stan's speech was titled "You are What You Cook?"  He gave his speech on the persuasive techniques needed in selling a retail item.  The largest portion of his speech was on meeting the customer's needs, particularly in the need of believability.  Jeanne had given a speech on the dangers of the microwave three weeks before; Stan was speaking on the safety of the microwave.  Jeanne was Stan's evaluator.

For a mentoring moment, Susann interviewed Betty, who'd been complimented on her gestures in a past evaluation.  Betty said her parents had been her role models in being warm and friendly with gestures.  She said communication skills had degenerated with all the texting on pads and phones.

For table topics Hoyt gave an interesting set of prompts dealing with classic lines from movies dealing with a legacy.  The two respondents, Joseph and Guest Deanne Emon, had a choice between two lines.  Joseph selected Deanne's husband to be the recipient of his speech.  "We're not so different, you and I," he said.  "But we are different in one way."  He said dramatically he'd do anything to achieve his legacy, anything, and "there's nothing you or anyone else can do to stop me!"

After the eyes and ears team gave the reports, Don Glovan gave the general evaluation and Judy closed the meeting.
