People were clearly anxious to get together for some summer fun at Toastmasters.  After the July 4th Holiday and the previous two weeks of a sizable number being out on vacation, this week was the biggest attendance ever at 23. It was President Susann Swan's first meeting to preside over and Joseph Girmann's first meeting to be Toastmaster.  Joke Master Caitlin Owens started off the real fun with some pet humor. Vicky Balson gave the always fun ice-breaker, speaking on dreams, goals, and legacies.  She related how her mission field had evolved in her home-schooling her seven kids and how she had been supported by her employer at United Community Bank to leave her comfort zone and become a Toastmaster. More serious were the speeches from two advanced Toastmasters.  Jeanne Resen on her Pathway addressed mentoring, specifically comparing a coach with a mentor.  She explained that the four qualities of a successful mentor were knowledge, support, respe...

Table Topics Master Betty McCallister prompted speakers with a wide range of topics. A summer memory that you would like to forget gave Karla cause to pivot and speak on a great memory of being 14 and traveling with her family to California from Ohio. Having any superpower, Carole turned back time to speak with her parents and grandparents to learn more about family history and recipes.  On the nicest thing that someone has ever said to her, Vicky recalled words of encouragement from people telling her how she had impacted them. Toastmaster Don Glovan talked about beating the heat theme with his home air conditioning going out. Joke Master Hoyt spoke about bad jokes and groans reported in a newspaper. Interim President Jeanne Resen conducted the induction of new members: Mary Beth Dallman, Danielle Messer, Carole Kitchen, and Molly Garnett. Don's speech was about improving and understanding love.   He had the audience write their definitions...

Mirth was chosen by Word Master Mary Beth to support the humor theme. Toastmaster Stan Coss used three types of humor featured in June's Toastmaster Magazine, the cover story on "The Magical Power of Humor."   Randy presented a great twist on sharing bad news as Joke Master.  Then Stan launched into his first type of humor, vulnerability.  For two more transitions he used the other types of humor in the magazine, relatability and self-deprecation.  In each he expanded on a Pardee emergency he'd been treated for four years ago. Carole’s ice-breaker speech was titled, "Who Am I?"  She spoke about her family heritage and the various careers that she has had. She described her educational path and her current studies. Joseph spoke about communications styles. And personality styles based on Carol Tuttle’s work. He described energy types, facial features and other ways to identify one of four energy types of people, citing a few FSTM members as exam...

MaryBeth is presented with her Table Topic dilemma on what side of her prompt she will choose, based on Caitlin's scrolling cell phone. It and other speaking experiences of the meeting were quite an adventure.  Toastmaster Judy Groff gave introductions and transitions related to her adventure theme.  Joke Master Melinda Lowrance gave her humor from a visit to the Holy Land. Jeanne’s speech, "The Perfect Storm," described the event of her brother’s celebration with his partner at a fancy restaurant and the calamities, including the meal catching on fire.  Don Emon evaluated Jeanne’s speech.  He praised her confidence, her appearance, her gestures.  He suggested doing several vignettes instead of one in depth, to keep the audience’s attention from wandering. Randy gave his icebreaker speech about becoming a chef via architecture and Lincoln logs and how his father supported his final career path.   Joseph praised how Ra...

In a table topic, Molly Garnett said she found happiness with parasailing. Toastmaster Jeanne Resen sailed through her happiness theme. She spoke about how happiness is measured.  She talked about how Eastern religions achieve happiness.  Jeanne also summarized what Judaism and Catholicism speak about happiness.  She included Abraham Maslow’s theory of peak experiences. Wordmaster Caitlin Owens used Precipice as the w ord of the day. The G rammarian was Melinda Lowrance, the Ah Counter was Don Groff, and the Timer was Hoyt Griffith. Joseph Girmann told a joke about Sherlock Holmes and Watson going camping. Guest speaker Rei Fuller spoke about the benefits about joining and advanced club.  She is a member of the Advanced speakers of Asheville. She spoke of the benefits of the level of feedback that members receive and he experience of delivering longer speeches.  Members need to have achieved at least level 2 in Pathways or have given...

Evaluator Melinda wore sunshine colors, noted Toastmaster Karla, in her SALUTATION to the summer theme. Word master Don Groff defined and sampled that word so well that members picked up using it from the start.  As there was a last-minute cancellation of the joke master, Joseph filled in with a great three-part twist.  We were led down one path and then redirected down another.  In summary, St. Patrick, by touch, healed the first man of arthritis, the second man of migraines, and the third man insisted he was not to be touched because he wanted his disability checks. Jeanne spoke on "Do You Know How to Speak?"  This was the first speech on the Level Two of Pathways, on knowing which one of the four communication styles you tend to using: initiating, analytical, direct, and supportive.  Jeanne said if you identified your own style, then you could tailor it to fit the needs of the listener.  She was evaluated by Melinda.
