No contest photos are to be seen here and judges are to remain anonymous
The Evaluation Contest was won by Molly Garnett, a relative newcomer. Former Toastmaster Nathan Garnett would have been especially proud to see his mom speak so eloquently, and that after just five minutes of preparation time!
Veterans Judy Groff and Karla Reese also performed very ably, winning second and third place respectively. Two other relative newcomers, Carole Kitchen and Caitlin Owens, also evaluated effectively in the short time frame allowed. Unfortunately, one had to be disqualified in running just short of the time minimum of 90 seconds.
Karen Alexander acted as Contest Master, orchestrating all the various movements and directing all the supporting players into one smooth-flowing composition.
Chief judge was Susann Swan. Sergeant at Arms was Sally Jones. Timers were Don Glovan and Don Groff. Ballot-counters were Melinda Lowrance and Stan Coss.
The test speaker was Area Director Bryan Smith. He delivered his 5-7 minute speech on "Lessons from Literature," as the five evaluators attentively took notes. The evaluators were then escorted out and took just five minutes to add to the notes they'd each begun. Then the notes were collected and returned, in turn, to just the evaluator whose name had been drawn first. That evaluator then presented her evaluation to the audience of all except the evaluators. Then the second evaluator came into the room and presented her evaluation and so forth.
Photos were not to be taken during the contest, and judges were to remain anonymous.
Evaluating judges for each evaluator scored each according to the criteria on the judges ballot sheet, and a winner was declared after ballots were tabulated.
It requires a lot of finesse and concentration to evaluate effectively: skills of observation for not just the glows but the grows. Then the quick wit and tact to formulate what to say and how. The grows normally are sandwiched in between the glows.
Molly Garnett will move on to the area contest on October 12th at 8:30 to noon at Habitat for Humanity. This contest will be combined with a humorous speech contest. To arrive at the humorous contest contestants, some area clubs will hold their own humorous contest and others will submit a representative.
The area contest should be a serious growing experience and a humorous one as well, so mark your calendars to attend!
